Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut

14 May

Israel Independence Day (Yom HaAtzmaut) is immediately preceded by Remembrance Day (Yom HaZikaron). This is done so that the memory of all the individuals who fought to create and keep the state and who lost their lives to aggression and terrorism are front and center in a collective sense. I am unaware of another country who does this. In addition to remembrance services, the country’s siren system sounds for two minutes across the entire state. Everyone stops what they are doing, stands up, gets out of their cars, and bows their head and thinks about a family member, a friend, a classmate, a grocery store clerk, bartender or whomever that they personally know and lost.

For this occasion, I wrote the following two tweets.

The first tweet is related to the hostage Noa Argamani, who is still a hostage in Gaza, and her mom Liora Argamani, who is under palliative care for brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme). The second tweet is the duet between an Israeli singer and Dafna Elkayim, who with her sister were hostages in Gaza for 51 days. A very compassionate and reasonable posting, considering the occasion and current events.

Within an hour, the first comment on the second tweet was hateful, ugly and threatening. I did a screenshot of it, as I reported the account for threatening violence and hate. It is an image with Hebrew text, obviously to avoid machine learning algorithms that are text based. The Hebrew and its translation are as follows:

הלוחם מחכה בשביל לנקום בכם למען המקומות הקדושים והחפים מפשע לא נעמוד חסרי מעש ונשחם אותכם.

The warrior is waiting to take revenge on you for the sake of the holy places and the innocent. We will not stand idle and pity you.

This is the reality of Jew hate today, a marriage of Islamists and Leftists.
