Recurrence in a Grand Mal Fashion

29 Oct

The last I posted about Susie’s cancer checkups was around a year ago.  She had a car accident in February 2012 and there was some changes in her MRIs that we were watching closely.  Well a year went by, and just prior to Susie’s cancer checkup, she experienced a grand mal/ generalized seizure.

It was September 18th.  Susie had made dinner.  Pearl, Susie and I were sitting at the table.  While we were eating, I was describing Gabriel’s apartment/ dorm at Cal Poly.  Susie was trying to ask or say something, but all that would come out was gobbledygook.  I asked if she was playing around, she laughed, but still could not say anything that was recognizable. So, I decided to take Susie to the emergency room.  Before we could leave, Susie went into convulsions.  Pearl called 911 while I held Susie.  The paramedics arrived quickly and the rest of the day/ night was a blur.

The short story is Susie’s scans from the ER showed significant changes from her scans from her FEB-2012 accident.  We’ve now met her neuro-oncologist, Dr. Yung, who feels that the lesion looks and quacks like a tumor.  So, we are back with Susie’s neuro-surgeon, Dr. Sawaya, with surgery set for 30-OCT-2013.  The surgery, while less complex than her original, still has risks to be mitigated.  One is related to speech/ communication, so the doctors at MD Anderson are determining whether to do the surgery with Susie awake or asleep.

So after fourteen years, we are back to fighting cancer.
