Democratic Primary

2 Mar

We sent in our absentee ballot last month for the Texas Democratic Primary. It’s interesting having already voted and hearing the last minute advertising, opinion polls, and so on. This is the first primary, I can remember, where the candidates are neck and neck so late in the race. Clearly Barack Hussein Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton have some strong supporters and are capturing the middle ground in an effective fashion.

While I’ve enjoyed Obama’s speeches, I have found him empty and lackluster in the debates. In addition, his positions (based on his website) seem more opinions rather than detailed proposals. He reminds me of George Bush running for Governor/ President except more eloquent and a Democrat change mantra. Many of our friends in Austin like him. From chatting with them, it seems their driving force is they do not like Clinton and they like what he says.

For us, we’ve voted for Clinton. Susie’s decision is mostly around female representation, experience, and rational thinking regarding economy/ war. Myself, I went through both their websites, listed out their positions, determined whether they were detailed and thought through or whether I agreed with them and then totaled the points.

Nonetheless, the tough question for me is what do I do if it is McCain vs. Obama. I don’t want to vote for a republican, but I expect McCain’s positions hold more water than Obama. I guess I will need to add a weighting to each category for calculating totals.  Hopefully on the 4th of March, Clinton will win and I will not have to go through the tough decision of weighing Obama against McCain.
